Major resources for women’s enterprise in the North of England

Women’s enterprise is to be a major part of a new £100 million push for economic growth in the three Northern RDAs. Increasing the rate of business start-ups is central to eliminating the old north-south economic divid according to a new report launched by the Deputy Prime Minister, who also unveiled plans for a £100 million ‘Northern Way Growth Fund’. For the first time the three Northern Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) have united to help the North reach its full economic potential. ‘The Northern Way’ is a growth strategy to boost prosperity across the North to close a £29 billion productivity gap with the rest of the country. A key target of the report is to increase the number of business start-ups in the North from 30 per 10,000 people to 33 per 10,000 people by 2008.  As part of this a significant women’s Enterprise Strategy will be launched. Valuable new resource for women seeking business advice

Women, Work and Childcare central to Chancellor’s Speech

Speaking at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, Gordon Brown said Britain had ‘wasted the potential and talents of millions’ in not tackling discrimination against women in work sooner.  In a speech dominated by ‘family-friendly’ promises  the Chancellor said that over the last 50 years of the welfare state, Britain had done little ‘towards advancing equal pay’, ‘little for maternity rights’ , ‘little for childcare’ and ‘little to end centuries of discrimination against women in work and at home’. In terms of policy,  Brown announced ‘a goal for the next term of a total of twelve months paid parental leave’ and ‘plans for high quality affordable child care for all and nursery education more suited to parents needs’.  Earlier, Patricia Hewitt had announced the terms of reference for the Women and Work Commission – which is set to deliver its first proposals in time for the next manifesto. Although short on specific policy it is encouraging to see women, work and equality at the top of the political agenda and this indicates that specific policy documents will be forthcoming.  To download transcripts of Gordon Brown’s and Patricia Hewitt’s conference speeches see: http://www.labour.org.uk/speeches/

US Women’s Business Centers having major impact on start-ups

Between 2001 and 2003, the US Small Business Administration provided $37 million in funding to up to 92 women’s business centers across the country. This investment seems to be paying off. During that two year period, the number of clients served nearly doubled (a 91% increase), the number of new firms created increased by 367%, and the businesses supported by these centers generated an estimated economic impact of $500 million in gross receipts. This analysis forms part of new report from the Women’s Business Council, titled “Analyzing the Impact of the Women’s Business Center Program’. The Women’s Business Center (WBC) program was started following the adoption of the Women’s Business Ownership Act in 1988. To download the new findings and for further information on Women’s Business Centers in the USA see: www.nwbc.gov

Government committed to more support for small firms

The Government has accepted all of Teresa Graham’s recommendations on the future of the Small Firms Loan Guarantee (SFLG). This commits the Government to reducing the bureaucracy surrounding the scheme, expanding lending limits to £250,000 per business and allowing successful, serial entrepreneurs to benefit by removing the current £250,000 limit on lending to any individual. The SFLG was introduced to help individuals overcome the problems obtaining the finance to start up new small businesses and also to help small businesses expand.  Teresa Graham was asked at the end of last year to work closely with the main SFLG lenders to make recommendations regarding whether it is proving effective in tackling the financial barriers faced by start-ups and small businesses in the current market.
