ABOUT PROWESS

NEWS

GEM 2004 shows significant growth in women’s entrepreneurship

The gap between the number of female and male entrepreneurs in the UK has narrowed for the first time, according to the 2004 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Women’s entrepreneurial activity for 2004 was 46% of male activity compared to 42.9% in 2003. GEM is a robust and well respected annual indicator of changes in entrepreneurial activity. This narrowing is the clearest indication yet that the Strategic Framework for Women’s Enterprise launched by PROWESS and the Small Business Service in 2003 is having a positive and profound impact. The specific and targeted initiatives recommended by the strategy are now being translated into more women’s start-ups. According to GEM the East Midlands has seen a relatively big increase in female entrepreneurs. The East Midlands Development Agency (emda) have prioritised a women’s enterprise strategy, appointed a women’s enterprise coordinator and launched a regional directory of women’s business support. These initiatives demonstrate that there are practical ways in which the number of women starting a business can be increased. Download report at: http://www.gemconsortium.org/

Minister calls on regions to recognise untapped potential of  women’s enterprise

Jacqui Smith, Minister for Women and Equality has continued her tour of the regions to contribute to the key objective of increasing the number of women starting and growing businesses across the English regions. In the East of England she took part in a roundtable discussion led by the Chief Executive of the East of England Development Agency (EEDA). There are over 100,000 women owned businesses in the East of England, but if the female start up rate matched that of men there would be an extra 16,000. In the West Midlands, Smith emphasised that there has been progress, with 70,000 women owned businesses in the region. But she stressed that there was a great deal more to do, the Midlands would see an extra 11,000 firms if the start up rate of women matched that of men. “The figures show there’s a vast amount of untapped potential in the region” said the Minister. The tour continues this month with visits to Guildford, South East on Feb 8 and Newcastle North East on 22 Feb.

Women own just 10% of London Businesses

Majority female owned businesses account for just one in ten of all London businesses according to a new report from the Greater London Authority. Women are under-represented in business ownership in all sectors of London’s economy, particularly in the traditionally male dominated construction and manufacturing sectors but also in the financial services, transport and communications, and hotel and restaurant sectors. Female owned-businesses tend to be smaller than male-owned businesses and London’s business women report particular problems with raising finance and providing collateral. Launching the new report, London Mayor Ken Livingstone, said ‘Women are the majority of London’s population yet barriers often prevent them paying a full part in the capital’s economy. The inequalities revealed here are bad for women and bad for London’s economy and society. Read ‘Women in London’s Economy’ at:

US sees 33% increase in minority women-owned businesses

Between 1997 and 2004, the number of African American women-owned firms increased by 33%, growing at six times the rate of all U.S firms. As of 2004 there are an estimated 414,472 majority-owned privately held firms owned by African American women in the US, employing nearly 254,000 people and generating $19.5 billion in sales. The US Small Business Association says this growth is due to a range of factors including; increasing levels of education, work experience and a desire for greater flexibility. The ‘glass ceiling’ is also said to disproportionately affect African American women and leads them to decide to do for themselves what they can’t do in a corporate setting. The new statistics have been released by the US National Women’s Business Council as part of a fact sheet to mark America’s Black History Month this February (black history month in the UK is in October 2005).  Download the African American Women and Entrepreneurship fact sheet at:  http://www.nwbc.gov/ResearchPublications/keyFacts.html

Ensure Women’s Enterprise in NW Strategy

A new consultation document from the North West Regional Assembly, highlights ‘Supporting women in business and encouraging more women into enterprise’ as a proposed regional priority. The report recognises that ‘women are playing an increasingly important role in enterprise within the Northwest, but that support is often inadequate’ and there ‘is a lack of mainstream funding’. ‘Action for Equality’ asks a series of consultation questions and asks respondents to highlight their priorities. Deadline for responses is 29 April 2005. Download report at: http://www.nwra.gov.uk/equality/nwra_action_for_equality.pdf

Promote Procurement – Get involved

The SBS will soon be launching a new national web portal to enable small businesses to have direct access to local and central government business opportunities. This service has been piloted in the West Midlands, where it was found that there was a real lack of training opportunities for businesses who want to find out ‘How to Tender’. To fill this gap in the market the West Midlands Procurement Portal are looking to hold a series of 1 day ‘How to Tender’ workshops. They are currently looking for business support agencies to collaborate with in the hosting and delivering of these. If you are interested in finding out more contact, Richard Dooner on 0121 450 4239 or email: r.dooner@birminhgamchamber.org.uk www.wmportal.co.uk
